Should I buy a new computer?

Your computer isn't so hot. You hire someone to look at it. Your computer is getting on a bit, but it's been pretty good - right? Never missed a beat. Old faithful. Just a little problem. So the tech comes. It takes them 3 hours to fix your computer. You really should have more RAM. You're running out of hard disk space. You don't have a DVD burner. You only have USB1 which is too slow.

  • $150 for the computer technician's visit
  • $200 for more RAM
  • $50 to fit the RAM
  • $120 for the new hard disk drive
  • $200 for internal DVD burner
  • $100 PC card for USB2/firewire
  • total = $820
  • you still have an older, slower computer with a bit more capacity
  • cost of a new computer with all of that? You can get them starting from $800.

A new computer:

  • is MUCH faster
  • is sexier - i.e. not old - think new car
  • has a warranty
  • has the latest operating system installed
  • you still have your old computer! Give it to your kids to play with. Take it away with you on trips

They say computer technology doubles every year. So a 4 year old computer is positively pre-historic. It might still do the job and may still seem fast, however you'll be blown away by what a new system can do.

I have never seen anyone who hasn't been thrilled by a new computer. Not ever.
